SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's cross country team strengthened its program by announcing the addition of seven freshmen runners for the fall of 2007. Zach Bonner, Alex Boll, Michael Calcagno, Chris Mosier, Robbie Reid, Chris Sampson, and Matthew Spear will all enter Santa Clara as freshmen in the fall of 2007.
"The depth of talent in this recruiting class is our best ever," said assistant coach Felipe Montoro. "With the success of last year's class, the next few years will be exciting as the team develops and gains strength and experience. We fully expect a few of these incoming freshmen to be challenging for the top seven next fall, and all of them to be major contributors in the years to come."
Bonner is coming from one of the most successful high school programs in the state. While at Davis (CA) Senior High School, Bonner helped lead the team to a third place finish in the Division 1 state finals at Woodward Park. At the state meet, he covered the 5k course in a 15:57 time, earning 38th place. Bonner also had an excellent finish at the Sweepstakes Race at the Stanford Invitational covering the 5k course in a time of 15:51, earning 35th place, and placed third at the San Joaquin CIF Section meet with a 5k time of 16:38. He also competed in track at Davis, running the 800m, 1600m and 3200m.
Winchester, Massachusetts native Alex Boll comes to Santa Clara from Northfield Mount Hermon School. This former multi-sport athlete finished his senior season earning second place at the New England Prep School's Championship with a 5k time of 16:45, and first at the Loomis Chaffee/Taft Tri meet with a 5k time of 16:24. He also ran the 800m, 1500m and 3000m for Northfield's track team.
Calcagno is another multi-sport athlete set to arrive at Santa Clara in the fall and his father, Greg, is a former star football player for Santa Clara. The San Jose native played football, track and cross country at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, California. He helped the Lancers earn a fourth place Division III finish at the California Interscholastic Federation State Cross-Country Championships in Fresno, covering the 5k course at Woodward Park in 17:07 seconds, and personally finishing 100th out of 195 runners.
Mosier comes to Santa Clara from this year's Division 1 California State Champions, the Trabuco Hills High School Mustangs. His team set the California record with the fastest team time ever on the Woodward Park 5k course with an overall time of 77:55. Mosier personally placed 22nd at the state meet covering the 5k course in 15:44. Other season accomplishments included earning a sixth place finish at the Sea View League Finals and completing a three-mile course at Irvine Regional Park in 15:04. At the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Finals he placed 15th with a 15:26 finish on the Mt. Sac course, and he also placed 35th at the Nike Team Nationals, a finish which helped lead his team to ninth place. He ran the 1600m and 3200m for Trabuco Hills' track team as well.
Reid enters Santa Clara after a strong senior season at Mountain View High School He placed second in the El Camino League Finals held at Crystal Springs, with a time of 15:45, and at the CCS Finals held at Toro Park in Salinas he finished in 16:11 earning a sixth place finish, which qualified him for the state meet. At the state meet he placed 53rd with a time of 16:26 at the 5k Division II race at Woodward Park. Running some of the shorter distances in track, Reid made a big impact also, placing second in the 800m at the CCS Championships. He also ran the 400m and 1600m.
Chris Sampson comes from Mater Dei High School in Southern California. A former tennis player, he has quickly adapted to long distances during his short career. During his senior year he earned his best time at the Dana Hills Invitation with a three-mile time of 15:31. He placed fifth at the Empire League finals at Central Park in Huntington Beach, Calif. with at time of 15:50. Ending the season he finished 13th in the Southern Section Division II CIF Finals with a 15:56 time at the Mt. Sac course. At Mater Dei, he ran the 800m and 3200m.
The final member of the 2007 incoming freshmen class is Matthew Spear of Portland, Oregon. Spear joins the Broncos from the strong Jesuit High School program. During his senior season he was able to drop his 5k time from 18:23 to 16:47.
