(San Francisco) - Kenny Sparks (Oakland, CA) has signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to compete in cross country and track at the University of San Francisco, as announced today by head coach Helen Lehman-Winters. A 2006 Junior College All-American lifted City College of San Francisco to back-to-back California State JC Championships in 2005 and 2006.
"Kenny has improved tremendously at City College during the last year," Lehman-Winters said. "He will bolster our current cross country squad this fall and he is capable of making a huge impact during our first season of men's track in the spring. He has great range, loves to run and is a perfect fit for our program."
During his standout track career, Sparks was a three-time NorCal medalist, posting a runner-up finish in 1500 in 2006, following a third place showing in the same event in 2005 and also placed third in the 2006 5000 meters. A two-time Coast Conference champion in the 1500 and the 5000, Sparks owns personal bests of 1:56.36 (800), 3:58.11 (1500) and 15:18.36 (5000).
Sparks also turned in strong performances in cross country helping CCSF to its best NorCal (3rd) and State (9th) finish since 1969 during the 2004 campaign. A two-time All-Coast Conference selection, he placed fifth in the 2005 NorCal meet, earning first team honors.
Sparks competed at Castlemont High School where he won the 2003 Oakland League and Section Cross Country races.
