Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's men's and women's cross country teams officially began their 2007 season with the start of training camp. Head coach Randy Rau welcomes seven newcomers and 10 returning harriers to the fold.
"I am excited that all the athletes are back on campus and are ready to run," Rau said. "The camp will be tough and prepare us for a competitive schedule."
The Gaels will take part in intense double days until the first meet. This afternoon, both squads did their training in the hills of King's Canyon.
Rau returns his top women's runner in senior Karrie Hagedorn. The Salem, OR native became the first Gael to compete in the NCAA Regionals since 2002. Hagedorn finished 17th overall at the WCC Championships and led SMC to a sixth place finish.
On the men's side, David Stiles returns for his junior campaign. Stiles was primarily the number two runner for the Gaels behind former standout Sean Hanley. Stiles led the Gaels at the WCC Championships and posted a personal best 28:40 at the Willamette Invite.
The newcomers include Tess Grannemann (Hoquiam, WA), Madison Dengler (Ft. Collins, CO), and Alex Bettencourt (Kingsburg, CA) on the women's side. For the men, Rau welcomes Nick Shea (Carmel, CA), Mark Blucher (Salinas, CA), and Bradley Alban (Thousand Oaks, CA).
Saint Mary's will begin its season at the Chico State Invitational on Saturday, September 8. The Gaels will then head down to San Diego for the Aztec Invitational before taking a trip to paradise for the University of Hawaii Invitational on Saturday, September 22. The WCC Championships is slated for Saturday, October 27 at Crystal Springs.
