SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The USF men's and women's cross country teams will host the 17th annual San Francisco Invitational at Golden Gate Park Saturday, September 5. The women's 5k begins at 9:15 AM, with the men's 8k to follow at 10:00 AM. A picnic, open to Dons athletes, staff, family, alumni and friends begins at 11:00 AM. Speedway Meadow is located in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and is located above 30th avenue off JFK Drive.
For USF, junior Nicole Bowler and sophomore Hillary Kigar will lead the women's squad in the event. Last season, Bowler finished 10th (18:36.80) and Kigar came in 32nd (19:31.40). Six newcomers, all freshmen from one of the best recruiting classes in program history, will get their feet wet in this opening meet. Eva Krchova (Brno, Czech Republic), Chloe Trelevan (Tacoma, WA), Heather Zytkewicz (Oceanside, CA), Hayley Niles (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA), and Alice Baker (Oakland, CA) round out the seven runners for the Dons.
Opponents in the women's race include UC Davis (6th in NCAA Western Region in 2008), Cal (7th in the NCAA Western Region in 2008), Sacramento State, San Jose State, Santa Clara, UC Santa Cruz, Holy Names, Pacific, and Mills.
On the men's side, three top returners will lead the Dons. Sophomore Ganbileg Bor was the top USF finisher last season, coming in 8th (25:46.30). Junior Jesus Romo (16th, 26:07.00) and senior Alex Nelson (redshirt in 2008) round out the veterans running the race. Freshmen Adrian Rafiee (San Diego, CA), Jordan Baker (Spokane, WA), and Jason Waldram (Beaverton, OR) will also compete on Saturday.
Opponents in the men's race include Cal (4th in NCAA Western Region and 22nd at the NCAA Championships in 2008, UC Davis (11th in NCAA Western Region in 2008), Sacramento State, San Jose State, Santa Clara, and Holy Names.
