WCC men's cross country teams make successful 2012 debuts

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- WCC non-conference action continues this weekend as two teams travel to select invitationals.


  • All nine West Coast Conference schools made their season debuts this past Saturday, September 1.

  • Loyola Marymount opened with a win at the Mark Covert Classic. The Lions were led by junior Weston Strum (4th individually), and placed all five runners in the top 11 individually (4-5-8-9-11). San Diego and Pepperdine also competed, finishing in 13th and 17th place.

  • Portland opened with a 2nd place finish at the Pier Park Invitational. The Pilots placed three runners in the top-10.

  • San Francisco hosted the annual USF Invitational, finishing in third place out of 17 teams. Santa Clara was close behind in 5th place, while Saint Mary's finished in 11th place.

  • BYU topped the field at the Aggie Invitational, led by Steve Flint's runner-up finish. Spencer Gardner and Thomas Gruenewald finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

  • Gonzaga finished 2nd at the Clash of the Inland Northwest, featuring top-10 finishes by Tate Kelly and Chris Boyle.

  • Two teams see action this coming weekend as Loyola Marymount attends the UC Irvine Invitational and Santa Clara appears at the Hornet Jamboree.

  • The 2012 WCC Cross Country Championships will be held at Fernhill Park in Portland, Ore. on October 27.
