Cross Country Begins Season in Impressive Fashion

Davis, CA -- The Saint Mary's men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2006 season from the Wildhorse Golf Club. The men's team was led by senior Sean Hanley who ran a time of 29:04. The women's team was led by junior Karrie Hagedorn, who posted an impressive time of 19:42.

The women's team began the season in an impressive fashion. Saint Mary's finished fifth of 13 teams in the race, beating out Sonoma State University and the University of Pacific. Lead runner Hagedorn's time of 19:42 marks a personal best for the junior, beating her previous best time by an impressive 38 seconds. Senior Claudia Aguilera placed second for the Gaels with a time of 20:35. This time also marks a new personal best, beating her previous personal best by 16 seconds. Clare Schwallie also crossed the finish line at 20:35. Newcomer Haley Hunsaker placed fourth for the Gaels in her first collegiate race with a time of 20:54. Senior Deanna Price placed fifth for the Gaels with a time of 21:53.

Sophomore Jenna Zack posted a time of 22:17. Ruzena Kovacic ran a time of 22:41. Abigail Harris ran a time of 23:51 and Sarah Nownes rounded out the Gael women with a time of 25:51.

On the men's side, senior Sean Hanley led the Gaels with a time of 29:04. His time of 29:04 is over a minute faster than his time on the same course last season. Sophomore David Stiles placed second for the Gaels with a time 29:12. Stiles marks another Gael to run a person best, beating his previous best time by 35 seconds. Junior Alex Nabors placed third for the Gaels with a time of 30:11. His time of 30:11 is 2:37 faster than the time he ran on the same course in 2005. Junior Peter Mathieu placed fourth for Gaels running a time of 30:41. Sophomore Eric Villegas placed fifth for the Gaels with a time of 31:06.

Sophomore Michael Truxton ran a time of 31:09. Newcomer Daniel Reyes rounded out the Gaels with a time of 34:37.

The Gaels return to action next weekend when the travel to San Diego to compete in the Aztec Invitational. The meet is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
