SAN BRUNO, Calif. - If the preseason coaches poll is any indication, the race for the 2014 West Coast Conference Women's Cross Country Championship should be very competitive. Portland was selected to take the title this season after capturing one more vote than five-time defending champion San Francisco.
Portland collected 71 points, including three first place votes, while the Dons checked in with 70 points and four first place votes. Just five points separated the top four teams in the annual preseason poll of the WCC's 10 coaches. Loyola Marymount and BYU tied for third place with 66 votes. The Lions earned two first place votes, while the Cougars earned the remaining first place slot.
Gonzaga was picked fifth with 52 points, while Santa Clara was sixth with 39. Saint Mary's (30), Pepperdine (24), San Diego (23) and Pacific (9) rounded out the poll.
Five programs placed at least one student-athlete on the preseason All-West Coast Conference Team. San Francisco led the way with three preseason picks while BYU, Loyola Marymount and Portland each had a pair of representatives selected.
Six West Coast Conference teams are set to compete in the 2014 WCC Preview race Saturday, September 13 at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, Calif. Baylands Park will serve as the site for the 2014 WCC Championship on Saturday, November 1.
