This Week in Cross Country: The Saint Mary's men's and women's cross country teams are set to travel to San Diego, CA to compete in the 62nd annual Aztec Invitational from Balboa Park. The women are set to begin their 5K race at 9:00 a.m. The men are scheduled to begin their 8K race at 10:15 a.m.
Scouting the Competition: The Aztec Invitational will feature two Mountain West Conference Schools, the University of Nevada Las Vegas and host of the Invite San Diego State University. The Gaels will see their first taste of conference action as they will be racing against Loyola Marymount University. LMU currently ranks second in conference for the women's team and third for the men's team.
Week in Review: The Gaels are coming off of an impressive first race in which three Gaels set personal best times. For the women, lead runner Karrie Hagedorn and second runner Claudia Aguilera both posted new personal best times with 19:42 and 20:35, respectively. For the men, second runner David Stiles began his sophomore season in impressive fashion recording a new personal best time of 29:12.
Newcomers First Race: Freshman Haley Hunsaker and junior Daniel Reyes saw action in their first collegiate race this past Saturday. Hunsaker placed fourth for the women with a time of 20:54. Reyes finished seventh for the Gaels with a time of 34:37.
A Look at SMC Head Coach Randy Rau: Randy Rau enters his eighth season as the head men's and women's cross country coach. In his first season at the helm he was named WCC Coach of the Year. Under his tutelage, runners have earned four All-WCC selections, a Freshman of the Year honoree and five honorable mention accolades. Individually, both the men and women's school records have been shattered. Members of his men's team have posted 29 of the 30 fastest times in the history of the program.
New Week for the Gaels: After competing in San Diego the Gaels will head to the Pacific Northwest to compete in the Willamette Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 9:00 a.m. from Willamette, OR.
