SAN BRUNO, Calif. - With two programs in the national top-10 in the current USTFCCCA NCAA Division I rankings, the race for the 2014 West Coast Conference Men's Cross Country Championship should be very competitive. No. 7 Portland was selected as the favorite to take the title this season after capturing one more vote than defending champion No. 9 BYU.
Portland collected 61 points, including five first place votes, while the Cougars checked in with 60 points and four first place votes. Gonzaga earned 48 votes for third place, while Loyola Marymount followed in fourth place with 41. San Francisco rounded out the top-five teams with 39 votes followed by Saint Mary's (27), Santa Clara (24), San Diego (16) and Pepperdine (8).
Four programs placed at least one student-athlete on the preseason All-West Coast Conference Team. Portland led the way with five preseason picks while BYU had three. San Francisco had a pair of representatives selected.
Six West Coast Conference teams are set to compete in the 2014 WCC Preview race Saturday, September 13 at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, Calif. Baylands Park will serve as the site for the 2014 WCC Championship on Saturday, November 1.
