San Diego, Calif. - For the second straight weekend, Loyola Marymount cross country will head south to San Diego for a Saturday race. And the Lions are hoping the success of last weekend's USD Invitational rolls over to this weekend's 62nd annual San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
Last weekend at the USD Invitational, the Lion men won their first team title under Head Coach Scott Guerrero.
Saturday's SDSU Aztec Invitational will be held at historic Balboa Park. Last season at the same race, both LMU squads finished fourth. For the women, Laura Mickelson led the returners, finishing the 5000m in 18:27 for 12th place. The returning men were led in 2005 by Drew Haberkorn, who finished 13th in 27:32.
On the women's side, competitive Arkansas and Long Beach State will be among the field the Lions will face. A 12th-ranked (West Region) Long Beach State squad highlights the men's opponents.
The women's invitational (5K) goes off at 9:00 a.m., with the men's invitational (8K) following at 10:15 a.m.
The meet, now in its 62nd year, first began with a men's race on December 18, 1943. A women's division was introduced 34 years later in 1977.
The meet marks the Lions' final Southern California competition of the season.
