Women's Cross Country Teams Build Off Solid Season Starts

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- #18 San Francisco continues to keep pace in the national rankings with a second place at the Toledo Bubblebuster, while #5 BYU (Mountain), #8 Portland (West), #12 Gonzaga (West) and #14 Loyola Marymount (West) move up in respective regional rankings.


  • Five teams attended the WCC Preview Meet in Portland, Oregon (9/15) to gain a first hand look at the 2012 WCC Championship course. Gonzaga won the race while placing all five runners in the top-9 (3-4-5-8-9). Loyola Marymount came in second, led by Sheree Shea's runner-up finish. Portland, Santa Clara, and Saint Mary's also competed, finishing in fourth, fifth and seventh places, respectively.

  • BYU had a busy few weeks, beginning with their home event, the BYU Autumn Classic in Provo (9/14). The Cougars finished second overall, led by Lindsey Sowards-Nielson's fourth place finish.

  • BYU's next stop was the Toledo Bubblebuster (9/22), where they were joined by Portland and San Francisco. San Francisco led the way with a second place finish, while BYU and Portland finished in sixth and eighth place, respectively.

  • Pepperdine and San Diego battled high temperatures at the UC Riverside Invitational (9/15), but kept their cool and finished in 14th and eighth place, respectively.

  • San Francisco and Saint Mary's stayed close to home for the San Francisco State Invitational (9/14), and a successful weekend. San Francisco finished third, while Saint Mary's was led by Tiffany Monsalud.

  • Other action included Loyola Marymount earning a third place finish at the Mustang Challenge (9/22), while a young Gonzaga squad finished sixth at the Erik Anderson Invitational (9/22).
