Riverside, Calif. - Senior Kyla Maher and sophomore Brieanna Carroll turned in Top 20 finishes to help the Pepperdine women's cross country team to a second place showing at the 20-team UC Riverside Cross Country Invitational at the UC Riverside Farm Course Saturday morning. Maher completed the five-kilometer course in a time of 18:29 to finish 18th while Carroll recorded a time of 18:31 to place 20th.
In the men's five-mile run, junior Sam Hudson placed 61st with a time of 26:38 to help the Waves to a 12th-place finish in the 15-team field.
Host UC Riverside captured the women's event with 19 points while Pepperdine totaled 115 points to finish second. Cal State San Marcos (117) was third and was followed by Cal Poly Pomona (149) and Southern Utah (181).
The Highlanders placed six runners in the top nine, including Lisa Lopez, who finished second with a time of 17:40. Heather Frisone of Cal Coast TC won the race in a time of 17:30.
Southern Utah claimed the men's race with 68 points to finish ahead of second-place UC Riverside (78). Cal Poly Pomona (99) was third and was followed by Cal State San Marcos (110) and Occidental (131). The Waves totaled 320 points.

Pepperdine returns to action next Saturday when it travels to La Jolla, Calif., to compete in the UC San Diego Triton Classic.
