Cross Country Impresses at Bronco Invite

Baylands Park, CA -- The Saint Mary's cross country team competed in the Bronco Invitational this morning as a final tune-up before the West Coast Conference Championships. The Gaels had another fine showing as 11 of the 16 runners set personal best times. Overall, the women were led by junior Karrie Hagedorn with her time of 18:38. The men were led by senior Sean Hanley and his time of 28:12.

The Saint Mary's women's cross country team has had a great season going into WCC Championships. In Saturday's competition the top four runners all broke 20 minutes; which marks the first time in program history this has occurred.

Lead runner for the Gaels was Hagedorn with a time of 18:38. Hagedorn has led the Gaels in every race going into the conference championships. Clare Schwallie came in second with a time of 19:42, her fastest time of the year. Freshman Haley Hunsaker crossed the line with a time of 19:55. Placing fourth for the Gaels was Claudia Aguilera whose time of 19:59 marks a new personal best time, beating out her previous time by 20 seconds. Deanna Price placed fifth for the Gaels with a time of 20:03. Price's time of 20:03 marks a new personal best time, beating her old time by 27 seconds.

Jenna Zack (21:01), Ruzena Kovacic (21:23), Abigail Harris (22:56) and Sara Nownes (23:50) all set personal best times in Baylands Park this weekend.

The men were lead by Hanley's time of 28:12, his fastest of the year. Junior Peter Mathieu placed second for the Gaels with a time of 28:14. Mathieu's time of 28:14 marks a personal best by an impressive 58 seconds. Following suit was junior Alex Nabors, whose time of 28:52 is a personal best. This marks the second straight week that Nabors has set a personal best time. David Stiles crossed the line next with a time of 29:09. Eric Villegas placed fifth for the Gaels with a personal best time of 29:14.

Juniors Michael Truxton and Daniel Reyes both ran personal best times of 29:48 and 30:38, respectively.

After Saint Mary's impressive performance today at the Bronco Invite the Gaels will take a week off of competition to prepare for the West Coast Conference Championships. The conference championships will be held on Saturday, October 28 from Crystal Springs, CA.
