Moraga, CA- This Week In Cross Country: The Saint Mary's cross country team will compete in the West Coast Conference Championships this weekend. The WCC Championships will take place this Saturday, October 27th, and are to be held at Crystal Springs in Belmont, CA. The men will begin their 8K race at 9:00 a.m. The women will start their 6K race at 9:45 a.m.
Scouting the Competition: The Portland men's team enters the race with a rank of No. 21 in the nation. Portland has won the past 28 conference championships. Lead runner for the Pilots, David Kinsella, finished ninth overall in the NCAA Pre-Nationals with a time of 23:33 in the men's 8K and is expected to be a lead contender for the championships. On the Portland women's side Dana Morgan holds the top time in the WCC in the women's 6K with a time of 20:27. The Portland women's team has won ten of the eleven past conference championships.
Gaels Seniors: Peter Mathieu, Daniel Reyes, Karrie Hagedorn, Abigail Harris and Sarah Nownes will all race in their final competions this weekend. Karrie Hagedorn looks to be the Gaels front runner in her final race this weekend at the championships. Setting the pace for the women's team, the championships mark the end to an impressive career at Saint Mary's. Last year Hagedorn posted a top-10 finish at the WCC Championships coming in sixth with a time of 23:37 in the women's 6K. She then participated in the NCAA Regionals, the first woman runner for the Gaels since 2002.
A Look at SMC Head Coach Randy Rau: Randy Rau is in his ninth season as the head men's and women's cross country coach. In his first season at the helm he was named WCC Coach of the Year. Under his tutelage, runners have earned four All-WCC selections, a Freshman of the Year honoree and five honorable mention accolades. Individually, both the men and women's school records have been shattered. Members of his men's team have posted 29 of the 30 fastest times in the history of the program.
