USD Runners Head To WCC Cross Country Championship

Oct. 26, 2006

The University of San Diego men's cross country team will travel on Friday to Belmont, California to participate in the 2006 WCC Championship race this upcoming weekend. The West Coast Conference has sponsored this championship since 1975. Traditionally the Portland men's team has dominated the championship race having won 27 consecutive championships.

The USD Men will be strongly represented by Sophomore Chris Jacobs. He has posted a time of 26:06 which puts him as one of the 8th fastest 8km all time in USD history. He will be supported by Freshmen, Marcus Lopez and Martin Jimenez and Sophomore runners: Erik Stoddard, Louis Barrios, and Mark Hubbard and Senior Chris Durst.

"I'm excited about seeing the potential in the men's race at Crystal Springs," head coach Will Guarino said. "The course is rich in WCC tradition. It is a championship race that the runners will not forget."

This weekend race is strictly for WCC teams, which means less than 60 runners will participate.

"It is a race and you want to run and feed off a pack of runners," Guarino said. "You do not want to be the lone harrier racing by yourself. There are plenty of hills and turns which make it one of the most exciting courses in the West Coast."

The men will begin their 8km race at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
