Portland Takes West Coast Conference Men's Championship Crown, Looks Ahead to NCAA Regionals

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- #9 Portland defeated #7 BYU by one point in the WCC Championships to take the 2012 Conference Title, while Gonzaga posted the program's best finish since 2004.

WCC MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS QUICK HITS

  • All nine WCC teams competed at the 2012 WCC Championships at Fernhill Park in Portland, Ore. The University of Portland (32) captured the WCC crown, after narrowly beating BYU (33) for its 33rd conference title in the last 34 years.

  • In the individual race, BYU junior Jared Ward paced the field with a winning-time of 23:41.56, nearly six seconds faster than second place finisher Scott Fauble, a Portland sophomore.

  • Gonzaga (103) finished in third place, behind senior Tate Kelly's 11th place individual finish. The Bulldogs placed all five scoring runners in the top-26 on their way to the program's best finish since 2004.

  • San Francisco (105) came in fourth overall in the team race, with junior Jose Madera, senior Steven Garboden, and senior Ganbileg Bor crossing the finish line in 15th, 16th, and 17th places, respectively.

  • Loyola Marymount (124) junior Weston Strum's seventh place individual finish led the Lions to a fifth place team finish. Saint Mary's (160) junior Rajpaul Pannu's eighth place individual finish led the Gaels to a sixth place team standing. Santa Clara (189), San Diego (240), and Pepperdine (284) crossed the line in seventh, eighth, and ninth place respectively.

  • Four WCC teams continue to appear in the USTFCCCA National and Regional Polls:
    BYU (Mountain): 7/2 Portland (West): 9/2
    Gonzaga (West): NR/10 San Francisco (West): NR/11
