No. 8 Portland Wins 2014 West Coast Conference Men's Cross Country Championship

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - No. 8 Portland held off a late charge by No. 18 BYU to seize the 2014 West Coast Conference Men's Cross Country Championship Saturday at Baylands Park. The Pilots posted a team score of 28 to take their 33rd overall team title, while the Cougars finished with 31.

Portland senior David Perry won the individual title and established the 8K course record in the process, crossing the line with a time of 23:25.4. The Pilots placed three in the top-four finishers and four in the top-10, while BYU had five in the top-10.

Portland's Scott Fauble (23:26.1) finished second overall and Reid Buchanan (23:28) was fourth. Danny Martinez (23:35) placed eighth. Jonathan Nelson was the top finisher for the Cougars in third, while Conner Peloquin (23:31), Aaron Fletcher (23:32) and Steve Flint (23:33) finished fifth through seventh respectively. BYU's Connor McMillan took top-freshman honors, placing 10th in 23:36.

Gonzaga (109 points) finished third overall, followed by San Francisco (124) and Santa Clara (134). Jose Madera (23:23:37) placed ninth overall for the Dons.

Portland's Rob Conner was selected as WCC Coach of the Year for the eighth time.
