San Bruno, Calif. - After winning the 2006 West Coast Conference Championship by well over a minute, Loyola Marymount's Laura Mickelson was named the WCC's October Female Runner of the Month. Mickelson became the second Lion in six seasons to win the conference crown last Saturday in Northern California.
Mickelson won the women's 6K WCC title by well over a minute, crossing the line in 21:16, 1:16 ahead of the second place finisher from team champion Portland. Mickelson led the LMU women to a third place team finish, placing the Lions among the WCC's top-3 teams for the second straight season.
The El Segundo, Calif. native joined LMU's Edit Pakay, who won the women's WCC title in 2001, to make it two LMU champions in six seasons.
Saturday's race was Mickelson's fourth title of 2006, as she also took the title at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational, the San Diego State Aztec Invitational, and the Cal Poly Invitational.
The junior becomes the first Lion to repeat as WCC Runner of the Month, as she also won the title for the month of September.
Mickelson and the Lions are now preparing for the NCAA Regionals, which will be held next Saturday, November 11, in Portland, Ore.
