NCAA West Regional Recaps

MEN'S RECAP

The University of Portland men's cross country team finished 4th at the NCAA West Regional 10k meet on Saturday at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, OR. Sophomore Trevor Dunbar finished first overall, edging out Stephen Sambu of Arizona, earning NCAA West Regional individual champion honors.

All seven Pilot runners finished in the top 100 overall with sophomore Lars Erik Malde joining Dunbar in the top 15. Malde completed the race in 30:19.41, placing 12th overall.

The race included four nationally ranked teams, No. 2 Stanford, No. 3 Oregon, No. 12 Portland, and No. 22 California.

San Francisco finished 13th overall with an average time of 31:27.71 and were paced by junior Steven Garboden in 30:58.31, good for 41st overall. Loyola Marymount followed USF, finishing 20th out of 25 teams. Freshman Weston Strum paced the Lions in 31:28:62 for a top 75 finish. Gonzaga junior Chris Boyle finished 27th Saturday in 30:41.12 over the 10,000 meter layout.

"He ran pretty well, a good race," Gonzaga head coach Pat Tyson said. "He beat everybody from the West Coast Conference he competed against two weeks ago."

Rounding out the WCC performers were Santa Clara at 21st, San Diego at 24th and Saint Mary's at 25th overall.

Oregon and Stanford earned automatic berths to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 22nd in Terre Haute, IN. Individual and team at-large bids will also be awarded following the nine regionals held around the nation on Saturday; those bids will be extended on Sunday.

WOMEN'S RECAP

After capturing the individual crown at the WCC Cross Country Championships two weeks ago, Loyola Marymount's redshirt junior Tara Erdmann finished fourth overall in 20:11.96. Sophomore Sheree Shea was close behind in 20:30.74, good for 14th overall.

Pepperdine senior Chelsea Wishard placed 22nd with a personal best 6K time of 20:39. Wishard is now poised to become the Waves' first NCAA Championship qualifier but she won't know for sure until the complete field is announced late Sunday afternoon.

"Chelsea has had such an outstanding career that I would love to see her get one more chance to finish on top," said Pepperdine head coach Robert Radnoti, "but it's all up to the computers now to figure if she's moving on to nationals."

The San Francisco women finished 7th overall with an average time of 21:00.42. Freshman Jana Stolting paced the team with a 15th place finish in 20:31.44. Sophomore Eva Krchova was close behind in 24th place in 20:41.56. The Portland women finished 9th at the NCAA West Regional 6k meet on Saturday. Redshirt senior Dana Morgan was the top Pilot individual finisher as she ran a 21:06.32, good for 40th place.
