WCC Cross Country Teams Prep for NCAA Championships

SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- BYU's and Portland's men's teams each registered second place finishes in their respective regions, earning each team a spot in the NCAA Championship field. Loyola Marymount senior Sheree Shea's 11th place west regional finish extended her season, as Shea was awarded an individual NCAA Championship berth.


  • Entering this week's NCAA National Championships, two WCC men's teams continue to appear in the USTFCCCA National Rankings: BYU - 8th, Portland - 9th. The San Francisco women's team is receiving votes.

  • All 18 WCC men's and women's teams took part in the NCAA Regional Championship meets last week (11/9) in Seattle, Wash. (west regional) and Fort Collins, Colo. (mountain regional) Two teams, the BYU and Portland men, and one individual, Loyola Marymount's Sheree Shea, have advanced to this weekend's NCAA Championship meet (11/17) in Louisville, Ky.

  • In the mountain region, the BYU men (68 points) automatically qualified for the NCAA championships by virtue of their second place team finish. Two Cougars registered top-10 finishes as juniors Jared Ward and Tylor Thatcher crossed the line in third and ninth place, respectively.

  • In the west region, the Portland men (107 points) also claimed an automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championships due to their second place finish. The Pilots were once again paced by sophomore Scott Fauble, who finished in ninth place, with sophomore David Perry on his heels with an 11th place finish. Head Coach Rob Conner was later recognized as the USTFCCCA West Region Coach of the Year.

  • Also in the west region, Loyola Marymount senior Sheree Shea extended her individual season after finishing with a WCC-best time of 19:55, good for 11th place overall and a spot in the NCAA Championship field.

  • The NCAA Championships take place this Saturday, November 17 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky.
