LOS ANGELES - The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) of Loyola Marymount University selected soccer's Bobby Burling and cross country's Laura Mickelson as its Athletes of the Month for October. Burling and Mickelson led their respective teams to strong finishes in West Coast Conference (WCC) action during October.
Burling led the men's soccer team in scoring with two goals and four assists, despite playing at the forward position for just five of the team's eight games. In LMU's first three games of October, Burling helped the defense record a 0.87 goals against average. However, with the LMU offense struggling (one goal in 2+ games), Burling returned to the forward position late in the second half against San Diego and immediately drew a penalty kick to help LMU tie the Toreros.
In the Lions' next game when he started at forward, he scored twice, including the game-winning goal against San Diego. Burling went on to record four assists, including assists on two game-winners against Gonzaga and Saint Mary's.
The senior finished his LMU career in second place on the LMU all-time career assists chart, fifth place in career points, and sixth place in career goals. While Burling played forward in October, LMU averaged over 2.0 goals per game.
Mickelson became the second Lion in six seasons to win the women's title at the WCC Championship. Her first place finish in the 6k made her a first-team All-WCC selection for a second straight season.
She continued to make LMU cross country history, becoming the first to earn the WCC's Runner of the Month selection in back-to-back months (September and October 2006).
Also during October, the Lions' junior won the Cal Poly Invitational title. With those two titles under her belt, no runner beat Mickelson during the month of October.
LMU's SAAC will select a male and female Athlete of the Month for each month during the academic year. The selection is made by SAAC members based on the nominatons' athletic performance during the month.
