SAN BRUNO, Calif. - The Portland men finished 13th out of 31 teams at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. The Pilots were led by WCC Champion sophomore Alfred Kipchumba, who finished 12th overall with an 8K time of 29:51 to garner USTFCCCA Cross Country All-American honors.
Freshman Joash Osoro crossed the line second for the Pilots and 57th overall, while freshman Trevor Dunbar followed close behind with a 64th place finish. Senior Tommy Betterbed and sophomore Matt Frerker rounded out Portland's top five.
In the women's 6K race, WCC Champion senior Stephanie Wilson raced in her first ever NCAA Championship. As Santa Clara's first ever runner to appear at the national event, Wilson did not disappoint, placing 28th overall with a time of 20:37.3 to earn a spot on the 2009 USTFCCCA Cross Country All-American team.
Oklahoma State won the Division I men's race, while Villanova took home the national title on the women's side. Liberty's Sam Chelanga and Illinois' Angela Bizzarri set the pace for the men and women, respectively.
