Baseball Rallies Late To Earn Opening Day Victory

Moraga, CA- Trailing Nevada 3-0 after six innings the Saint Mary's baseball team plated four runs in the seventh and added another in the eight to grab a 5-4 victory on opening day from Louis Guisto Field. Junior backstop Ian Gordon knocked in the eventual winning run. With the win, the Gaels start the 2007 campaign 1-0 while Nevada falls to 0-1.

Newcomer Kyle Jensen got the Gaels on the board, driving in Gordon on a single on a single to center field. Gordon started the 1-out rally with a single to the third base side.

Senior Eric Cattoni then followed with a two-run double that plated freshman Anthony Alliotti. Fellow freshman Randy Wells delivered the big hit with a single down the right field line that scored pinch-runner Cory Miller and Cattoni.

Nevada evened the score at four when David Ciarlo singled to left and brought in Chris Siewart for an unearned run.

The Gaels quickly responded when Gordon hit a sac-fly to right that brought in pinch-runner Brian Hawkins. Freshman Michael Gonzales started the rally with a double off the left-center wall.

Freshman hurler Taylor Stanton came in and promptly closed the door with a 1-2-3 ninth. Taylor got a ground out and recorded back-to-back strikeouts in his Saint Mary's debut.

Nevada started the scoring in the second inning. Daniel Eastham doubled down the left field line to bring in Terry Walsh. Ciarlo singled to left-center to plate Eastham.

Eastham again struck for the Wolf Pack, this time in the fourth. Eastham smacked another double to bring in Walsh for the 3-0 lead.

SMC starter Sean Gleason allowed three earned on five hits in five innings. The transfer struck out three in his first career start in a Gaels uniform. Freshman Scott Schneider tossed three innings of solid relief. The newcomer scattered four hits and fanned two without a walk.

Nevada starter Ryan Rodriguez kept the Gaels at bay four six innings but ended up allowing four earned on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Rodriguez struck out eight and walked one in his 2007 debut. Cody Fiero allowed the fifth run for the Wolf Pack in a 1/3 of an inning pitched.

Gordon paced the Gaels with timely hitting at the plate, batting 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. The freshman tandem of Wells and Alliotti were impressive in their first collegiate start. Wells batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Alliotti finished 3-for-4 from the plate with a run scored.

Saint Mary's will face Nevada tomorrow for game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field. Saint Mary's Brandon Berl is slated to face Rod Scurry of Nevada on the hill in both hurlers first collegiate start.
