Late Inning Heroics Lifts Saint Mary's Over San Jose State

Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's junior J.P. Musgrove hit a walk-off single through the left side that plated junior Ian Gordon for the game-winner in contest that lasted two days and was played in two different ballparks. The Gaels (2-3) secured the 7-6 victory over the Spartans (0-1) in game one and will play game two in Municipal Stadium immediately following the victory.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Musgrove recorded his first hit of the ballgame. It was all the Gaels needed as Gordon scored from second to hand SMC its second win on the season. Gordon reached first after getting hit by a pitch. He was moved over to second by Kenny Fuglerud.

Freshman Taylor Stanton tallied his first career victory with a perfect ninth inning. The newcomer has retired all six batters he has faced this season.

Down 6-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, the Gaels stormed back to even the score. SMC scored one in the bottom half of the frame and then plated two in the seventh and one more in the eighth.

Saint Mary's sophomore Joel Staples drove in the game-tying run on a base-hit up the middle that scored senior Eric Cattoni. Cattoni started the inning with a double up the middle.

In the seventh inning, Gordon drilled a long single off the left-center field wall to bring in freshman Anthony Aliotti with the bases loaded.

Saint Mary's junior hurler Alex Jensen threw 3.1 innings of relief and allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout.

SMC starter Sean Gleason recorded a no decision after allowing nine hits and three earned runs in 4.1 innings. Cory Cabral recorded the loss after allowing the game-winner with two outs in the ninth.

Staples batted 3-for-5 on the day with three RBIs. Freshman Randy Wells is went 3-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored while Cattoni added two hits and two runs.
