TUCSON, Ariz - The Gonzaga University baseball team was unable to avoid a three-game sweep to No. 27 University of Arizona Sunday, falling 12-1 at Kindall Field in Tucson, Ariz.
With the loss, Gonzaga falls to 0-3 overall for the 2007 season, while Arizona improves to 3-0.
The Zags' Clayton Mortensen (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season, throwing 5.2 innings, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits and 2 walks while striking out six. Josh Monroe, Shawn Wayt, Chris Griffith and Matt Fields all saw time on the mound out of the Bulldog bullpen. Brad Mills (1-0) earned the win for Arizona in 6.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out five.
Gonzaga's only run of the game was scored in the top of the seventh inning when Aaron McGuinness, who singled to lead off the frame, scored on a single by Mark Castellitto. Castellitto finished the game going 2-for-3, including the Bulldogs' only extra base hit of the game, a double to right center in the fifth inning.
McGuinness was the only other Zag to record multiple hits Sunday, going 2-for-4, with two singles. For the three-game series against the Wildcats, McGuinness led Gonzaga batting .556 with five hits and two runs scored.
All but one Wildcat in the Arizona starting lineup added to its 12 hits Sunday, with five batters reaching multiple hits. Leading the Wildcats was Bill Rhinehart, who went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Rhinehart hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot to centerfield in the eighth inning to finalize the score.
The Bulldogs continue their 22-consecutive road game streak on Feb. 9, when they play the first game of a three-game series at No. 26 UC-Riverside. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
