Lions Fall in 2-0 Pitchers' Dual

Feb. 9, 2007

IRVINE, Calif. - The first road contest of the season also brought the first scoreless outing for LMU baseball. The Lions (3-2) dropped a 2-0 pitchers' dual at UC Irvine (2-2) Friday night.

UC Irvine struck in the bottom of the fifth when a sacrifice bunt squeezed in Josh Tavelli from third base.

The Anteaters added the second run in the eighth when designated hitter Matt Morris doubled down the left field line.

Both teams got just four hits on the night. For the Lions, the hits came from Jeremy LaMell, Eric Farris, Sean Dovel, and Angelo Songco.

The Lions also were charged with an uncharacteristic three defensive errors on the night.

UC Irvine starter Scott Gorgen (1-0) worked seven scoreless innings to earn the victory. Blair Erickson earned his second save of the season after tossing the ninth.

Meyers' line did not look like the line of a pitcher that suffered the loss. He finished with seven innings of work, allowing just one run on three hits. Meyers (1-1) also equaled his career high seven strikeouts.

LMU and UC Irvine will continue the three-game series Saturday in Irvine, Calif. with a 6:00 p.m. start. Fans can follow all of the action free of charge on both Gametracker and Lions' All-Access at www.LMULions.com.
