(Riverside, CA) - San Francisco couldn't find the offense in a 3-0 loss to UC Riverside on Friday afternoon at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Dons (4-3) only collected four hits compared with Riverside's (6-2) nine.
Junior Aaron Poreda (1-1) earned the loss, throwing 5.2 innings. The left hander allowed two earned runs off two hits, but did not walk a batter. Poreda struck out a season high seven batters. Senior John Quine threw 2.1 innings of relief, allowing the Highlanders final run (unearned) off one hit and three walks, while striking out one batter.
Riverside's junior right hander James Simmons collected the complete game shutout, only allowing four hits and a walk, while striking out 15 Dons and only facing three batters over the minimum.
The Highlanders scored two runs in the third off a single, a sacrifice bunt, a double and another single. Their final run came in the seventh off an error, a double and a sacrifice fly.
Senior catcher Jon Norfolk, senior left fielder Jonnie Knoble, junior first baseman Mitchell Bialosky and junior pinch hitter Matthew Lieb were the four Dons to earn hits (all singles). Knoble also stole his second base of the year.
USF and Riverside play game two of the three game series tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
