Moraga, CA- Saint Mary's junior hurler Sean Gleason was lights out while the Gaels offense was overpowering in a 16-1 rout over Utah Valley State Friday afternoon from Louis Guisto Field. With the victory the Gaels improve to 4-8 while the Wolverines drop to 0-3 on the season.
Gleason was nearly untouchable as the junior college transfer fanned 13 and scattered seven hits in eight innings to earn his first victory in a SMC uniform. Freshman Matt McCormick pitched a perfect ninth for the Gaels.
Saint Mary's scored all 16 runs in a five-inning span, plating multiple runs in four of the five frames.
After plating a run in the second, the Gaels erupted for four in third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth to run away from the Wolverines. SMC added two more in the sixth to secure the victory.
Eleven Gaels tallied a hit in the game with eight knocking in a run. Saint Mary's was led by freshman Randy Wells and Kyle Jensen. Wells tallied four hits in six at-bats and added two runs and a RBI. Jensen batted 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.
Freshman Anthony Aliotti continued to stay hot at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort and two runs scored with a RBI. Sophomore Joel Staples scored three times and added a hit while freshman Michael Gonzales knocked in two in his only at-bat.
Dan Bulow and Derrick Thomas tallied two hits each for the Wolverines. Tai Penrod was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in 2.2 innings.
Three Gaels are now batting over .400 on the season with Jensen and Aliotti sitting at .405. Wells follows with a .400 average. Gleason has struck out 24 in 23 innings pitched.
Saint Mary's looks to secure the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field. SMC hurler Brandon Berl will toe the rubber and face UVS starter Bryan Smith.
