SURPRISE, Ariz. - Evan Wells scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning Friday as the Gonzaga University baseball team upset No. 9 Oregon State University 6-5 in the opening game of the Coca-Cola Spring Training Tournament in Surprise, Ariz.
The win improves the Bulldogs to 2-5 on the season and marks their first win against a ranked opponent this year. The loss marks the first of the season for the defending national champion Beavers, who fall to 7-1 overall.
Earning the win for the Zags was relief pitcher Matt Fields (1-0). Fields pitched 0.2 innings, earned the win by being the pitcher of record when the game winning run was scored. CJ McClure earned the save for Gonzaga, retiring three straight batters in the ninth inning. Brandon Harmon started the game for the Bulldogs, allowing four runs, three earned, on 11 hits in 6.2 innings. Josh Monroe also saw time out of the pen for Gonzaga.
Mark Grbavac took for loss for Oregon State after allowing one run on two hits and a walk in one inning pitched. Michael Stutes started the game for the Beavers, throwing 6.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits and three walks.
Oregon State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring in both the first and second innings. The lead didn't last long though, as Gonzaga knotted the game 2-2 in the top of the third. With runners on second and third, Aaron McGuinness hit a sacrifice fly to score Michael Rhodes and advance the runner on second, Wells, to third. The next batter, Darin Holcomb, then singled to left field to drive home Wells.
The Beavers answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on run scoring hits by Mitch Canham and Jordan Lennerton.
After an Oregon State run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game 5-5, Gonzaga scored the game winning run in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, Wells singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. The next batter, McGuinness, smacked a single up the middle to take the 6-5 lead.
Wells lead the Zags at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three runs batted in. Wells' double in the third inning was the lone Bulldog extra base hit for the afternoon.
Gonzaga will return to action Saturday morning, when they face the University of Missouri in the second day of the tournament. Game time is slated for 10 a.m., PST.
