Fresno, Calif. - LMU baseball trailed early Friday night at Fresno State, but the Lions had made a game of it by the top of the seventh inning and trailed just 5-4 in what looked like it would be a down-to-the-wire thriller. Fresno State (3-6) responded by registering seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a lead it would not relinquish, topping LMU (3-5-1) in game one of the three-game series 15-4.
Fresno State finished the game with 10 unanswered runs, running away with the game in its final two at bats.
The Bulldogs took a quick 1-0 lead on the Lions, pushing an unearned run across in the bottom of the first frame. Erik Wetzel singled and advanced to second on a Lion throwing error. A balk advanced him to third, and Wetzel later scored on groundout by Steve Susdorf.
Susdorf added to his RBI total for the game when he posted a three-run home run in the third to put the Bulldogs up 4-0.
The Lions scored their first run in the top of the fourth, with Eric Farris and Taylor Shoop putting up back-to-back singles to give LMU runners on first and third with no outs. Freshman Angelo Songco later plated Farris with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
Fresno State earned the run back in the bottom of the fifth, when Loren Storey drew the first walk of the night from LMU starter Brad Meyers. A stolen base and passed ball placed Storey on third, and Susdorf made it five RBI when he brought home Storey with a single.
The Lions cut into the again lead by scoring two in the top of the sixth. It started with Sean Dovel, who was hit by a pitch from FS reliever Eric Otterson. Otterson and the next reliever Brandon Miller went on to walk the next three Lions to bring in Dovel. Then Michael Glomb's groundout scored Songco from third.
LMU added another run in the top of the seventh when Farris singled and Shoop reached first on an error. Dovel grounded into a double play, but Farris scored to make it 5-4.
Susdorf continued the damage in the bottom of the same frame, when his single through the right side plated another run to make it 6-4 Fresno State. He finished the game 3-for-4 with the six RBI to led Fresno State offensively.
LMU starter Brad Meyers suffered the loss, falling to 1-2 after allowing four earned runs in his 6.2 innings of work.
FS starter Brandon Burke improved to 1-1 after tossing five innings, holding the Lions to one run.
