Fresno, Calif. - LMU left 12 runners on base in a game where runs were tough to come by Saturday at Fresno State. The Bulldogs (4-6) secured the series win with a 5-3 victory over the Lions (3-6-1) in game two behind timely hitting.
The Lions threatened in the top of the ninth of the close game, getting two runners on with no one out. But LMU could not push across the needed runs, leaving another pair of runners on base to end the game.
Second baseman Eric Farris had the only multiple-hit outing for the Lions, but it was a big one, as he went 4-for-5 with a triple and an RBI.
LMU scored a run in the first when leadoff hitter DeAndre Miller drew a walk in the first at bat of the game from Bulldog starter Justin Wilson. Miller advanced to second on a groundout from Joe Zeller and moved to third on a wild pitch. Farris' at bat brought Miller home to give the Lions the early 1-0 lead.
Fresno State responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first after back-to-back extra base hits by Todd Sandell and Steve Susdorf.
The Lions had bases loaded with no one out in the top of the third, but fell victim to FS's Wilson, who got two strikeouts and a groundout to strand the three Lions on base.
LMU was able to tie it in the top of the fifth, when Farris put up a leadoff triple and Sean Dovel followed with an RBI single to make it 2-2.
Fresno State went up 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth on a trio of singles and a sacrifice bunt.
After two walks and a hit batter in the top of the sixth, Miller was able to draw another walk that plated Michael Glomb to make it 4-3.
But once again, the Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring an unearned run on a squeeze bunt play to keep a two-run advantage at 5-3.
LMU starter Daniel Macias (0-2) was solid over his seven innings of work, allowing just three earned runs while fanning three.
Lion reliever Mike Kenney fought off the Bulldogs in the bottom of the eighth, coming out of the pen to retire the side in order with two strikeouts.
Wilson (2-1) went five for Fresno State, allowing two runs on seven hits before giving way to the Bulldog bullpen. Closer Jason Breckley earned his second save of the season after throwing the ninth and holding off the Lion charge.
Catcher Danny Grubb went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Bulldogs.
The Lions and Bulldogs will conclude the three-game series Sunday with a 1:05 p.m. game. As always, fans can follow all of the action free of charge on both Gametracker and Lions' All-Access audio on www.LMULions.com.
