(Riverside, CA) - San Francisco suffered its second consecutive loss to UC Riverside, 9-2 on Saturday afternoon at Riverside Sports Complex. The Dons (4-4) were out hit by the Highlanders (7-2) 14-9.
Riverside scored all they would need with a four run second inning including a double and four singles. They also pushed across a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and two in the eighth.
USF scored one of their own in the fourth. Junior right fielder Luke Sommer reached base on an error by UCR's first baseman, Mark Samuelson. Sommer advanced to third on junior third baseman Brian Chavez's single and scored on senior catcher Jon Norfolk's single to right. They added their final run in the eighth when sophomore Zach Kim pinch hit for shortstop Tavo Hall and stroked a single to left. Sommer doubled to center to score Kim.
Senior left fielder Jonnie Knoble led Dons batters with two hits and a stolen base. Sommer, Norfolk, Kim, Chavez, senior center fielder Lucas DeLong, junior second baseman Joey Railey and junior first baseman Mitchell Bialosky all had one hit in the loss.
Senior right hander Jason Dufloth (2-1) earned the loss for the Dons, throwing six innings and giving up five runs (all earned) off 10 hits. Dufloth struckout three Highlanders and did not issue a walk. Senior Daniel Morales threw 2.0 innings in relief, allowing four earned runs off four hits and two walks while striking out one.
Riverside's D.J. Smith (2-0) earned the win in relief, throwing 1.2 innings and not allowing a run. Pat Cassa started for the Highlanders, going 4.1 innings and allowing one run off six hits.
For UCR, left fielder Aaron Wible and right fielder Mike Vass had three hits on the day. Shortstop Jamie Pedroza had two hits and three RBI.
USF finishes the three game series with UC Riverside tomorrow at the Riverside Sports Complex. Game time is set for 1:00 PM.
