Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team batted around en route to eight runs in the sixth inning to earn a 13-3 victory and secure the series Saturday afternoon from Louis Guisto Field. Sophomore Joel Staples blasted his first home run of 2007 to lead the Gaels. With the win, SMC improves to 5-8 on the season.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the sixth inning the Gaels busted out with eight runs in the frame to pull out its second double-digit run out-put.
Staples supplied the big blow for the Gaels as the sophomore drilled Saint Mary's first home run of the season over the left field wall for 3 RBI.
The Gaels added three more runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth. The Wolverines scored one in the first and another in the fifth.
Staples finished the ball game with a 2-for-4 effort and added three runs to his three RBIs. Freshman Randy Wells continued his hot series with a 3-for-4 day and two RBIs.
Freshman Brandon Berl recorded his first collegiate victory. The newcomer tossed seven innings and scattered nine runs and was tagged with two runs while fanning five.
Derrick Thomas led the Wolverines with a 2-for-3 effort and one RBI. Eli Slesk batted 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored.
Saint Mary's will look for the sweep tomorrow as it wraps up the series against the Wolverines. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. from Louis Guisto Field.
