Castellitto's Four Hits Lift Zags Over UTA 12-1

FRISCO, Texas - - Mark Castellitto hit a program record three doubles as the Gonzaga University baseball team defeated the University of Texas Arlington 12-1 Thursday in the opening day of the Southwest Diamond Classic in Frisco, Texas.

Gonzaga improves to 3-7 overall with the win, including going 2-2 in tournament play for the season. Texas Arlington falls to 3-6 with the loss.

Castellitto led the Zags, going 4-for-5 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. In addition to his three doubles, the freshman also hit a triple in the fifth inning.

CJ McClure (1-0) earned the win in relief for Gonzaga. McClure, who entered the game in the fifth inning, pitched 2.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out one batter. Josh Monroe started the game for the Bulldogs and struck out two, allowing one run on three hits in 4.1 innings on the mound. Chris Griffith and Bobby McEwen also saw time out of the bullpen for the Zags. Taking the loss for UTA was Dillon Gee (1-2), who allowed seven runs on eight hits over 7.0 innings.

The Bulldogs jumped all over the Mavs right out of the gate, posting five runs in the top of the first inning. Before an out could be recorded, the Zags jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a single by Darin Holcomb and a Castellitto double. Holcomb then scored on the first out of the inning, sacrifice fly to center by Bryan Winston. With two outs, Mark Ellis belted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field, to score Castellitto and cap the five run inning.

Gonzaga added a sixth run in the third inning when Mike Terry singled to score Holcomb.

The lone Texas Arlington run of the afternoon was scored in the fifth frame when Danny Slinkman hit a run-scoring double that plated David McLeod.

Castellitto scored his second run of the game in the seventh inning on a double by Winston.

The Zags capped game scoring with five more runs in the eighth inning thanks to run-scoring double by Wells and one-run single by Holcomb. The other three runs of the frame came on a bases-clearing three-run double to left field by Castellitto.

Brandon Harmon (0-2) is projected to get the start for the Bulldogs Friday when Gonzaga faces the University of Texas - San Antonio in the second day of the Southwest Diamond Classic. Game time is scheduled for 9 a.m., PST.
