FRISCO, Texas - Brandon Blank, Dustin Colclough and Ryan Wiegand all recorded three hits Saturday as the Gonzaga University baseball team defeated Dallas-Baptist University 6-4 in the final day of the Southwest Diamond Classic in Frisco, Texas.
With the win, Gonzaga finishes the Classic 2-1 and improves to 4-8 overall for the season. Dallas Baptist drops to 5-5 overall, including going 1-2 for the weekend.
Wiegand finished the evening going 3-for-4 with two singles and a home run, while scoring three runs and driving in two. Wiegand's home run marked the lone Gonzaga extra-base hit of the game. Colclough recorded three singles and added one run scored, as well as a RBI. Blank registered three singles and one RBI.
Bulldog Chris Highmark (1-3) earned his first win of the season, allowing four runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out two over 6.2 innings. Shawn Wayt earned his first save of the season, allowing no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. CJ McClure also saw time out of the pen for the Zags. DBU's JeremeWilson (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits and four walks over 4.0 innings.
Wiegand lifted the Zags to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when he hit his second home run of the season, scoring Darin Holcomb. Gonzaga added another run in the second inning when Colclough, who singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on an error, scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Blank.
Holcomb and Wiegand each added singles and scored in the top of the third to give the Zags a 5-0 advantage. Holcomb was plated on a sacrifice fly by Mark Castellitto, while Wiegand scored on a Patriot error. The Zags padded their lead in the sixth inning when Tyson Van Winkle grounded into a double play that scored Wiegand.
Highmark held the Patriots hitless until the fifth inning, when Dallas Baptist used two doubles and a single to scored two runs. DBU capped scoring in the sixth inning by taking advantage of two Bulldog walks to lead off the inning.
For their efforts at the Classic, Mark Castellitto and Brandon Harmon were named to the All-Tournament Team. Castellitto finished the three-game event going 6-for-11 (.545) with two runs and six RBI. His three doubles Thursday against the University of Texas Arlington, set a GU mark for doubles in a game. Harmon threw a complete game Friday as he suffered the loss against the Unversity of Texas San Antonio. In 8.0 innings of work, the junior allowed four runs, three earned on nine hits with three strike outs.
Gonzaga will continue play tomorrow when they play Missouri State University in a non-conference game on the campus of the University of Texas Arlington. Missouri State joined Gonzaga participating in the Southwest Diamond Classic this weekend but Sunday's game is not affiliated with the tournament. Game time is set for 10 a.m., PST.
