ARLINGTON, Texas - Michael Rhodes hit a one-run single to right center in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Gonzaga University baseball team over Missouri State University Sunday 8-7 at Clay Gould Ballpark in Arlington, Texas.
Gonzaga improves to 5-8 overall with the victory, including posting a 3-1 record this weekend. Missouri State drops to 2-2 overall.
The Zags' CJ McClure (2-0) earned the win in relief after allowing one hit and no runs in 3.0 innings. Clayton Mortensen started the game for Gonzaga throwing 6.1 innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out ten. Jeremy Stumetz also saw time out of the Bulldog bullpen. Taking the loss of the Bears was Jake Shafer (0-1). Shafer allowed two runs on a pair of hits and three walks.
Missouri State jumped out to an early start with a 5-0 lead after three innings. The Bears scored a pair of runs in the second with a two-run double by Ben Carlson and posted three more runs in the third with a two-run single by Kyle Paul and a run-scoring double by Clay Coulter.
The Bulldogs knotted the score 5-5 in the fifth, by sending all nine batters to the plate. The Zags were sparked by a two-run home run to left field by Brandon Blank, which scored Evan Wells, who singled to lead off the inning. Following a hit-by-pitch to Darin Holcomb and a single by Ryan Wiegand, Mark Castellitto smacked a single by the right side to score Holcomb. Two batters later, Mike Terry hit a double down the left field line to drive home Wiegand and Castellitto to cap inning scoring.
Missouri State posted two more runs in the top of the seventh on a single up the middle by Coulter and a sacrifice fly to left by Ryan Mantle. Gonzaga responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to bring the score to 7-6 on a run-scoring ground out by Aaron McGuinness.
With the Zags down 7-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs combined a hit-by-pitch an single, a Missouri State throwing error and a sacrifice run-scoring bunt by Blank to force extra innings.
In the 10th inning, Rhodes hit a walk-off single to right center to score Bryan Winston.
The Bulldogs will return to action Thursday when they participate in the Banana Belt Tournament hosted by Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho. This season marks four consecutive, tenth time overall, that the Zags have played in the tournament. Last season, Gonzaga posted a 3-1 record in Lewiston.
