Baseball Wins 15 Inning Thriller

LEWISTON, Ida. - Senior Jackson Brennan's RBI double in the top of the 15th inning gave the Gonzaga University Bulldogs the final run of the game as GU (8-6) won a thriller over Lewis-Clark State College (10-2) in the opening round of the Banana Belt Classic in Lewiston, Ida. GU then allowed only one runner in the bottom of the frame as they picked up the 8-7 win.

Trailing 7-6 entering the top of the eighth, Gonzaga evened the game as Josh Bryant scored on a wild pitch with two outs. Bryant entered the game as a pinch runner for Will Ayala who reached base on a pinch-hit single to start the rally. Gonzaga then took a one run lead in the top of the ninth as Zach Woodward led off the inning with a home run.

L-C State tied the game in the bottom of the ninth as a sacrifice fly by D.J. Kooken that scored Mark Thompson from third base. The Warriors attempted to win the game on the same play as Justin Fuller moved from first to second on the throw home and Matt Vogel attempted to score on the play. Vogel was thrown out at the plate by Gonzaga second baseman Scott Campbell.

In the 15th, Campbell was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He moved to second on a bunt by Darin Holcomb and scored on Brennan's double. Cory Powell pitched the final inning to pick up his first save getting two ground balls and a strike out. Brandon Harmon improved to 1-0 with two scoreless innings of relief. Mike Miller was tagged with loss, falling to 1-1.

Woodward had three hits to lead Gonzaga finishing 3-for-8. He also had a team-high 3 RBI. Brennan also hit his sixth home run of the season and Ryan Wiegand added his second. Gonzaga had three coaches tossed out during the contest.

Thompson and Vogel each had three hits for L-C State. The 15 innings was the longest game in L-C State program history.

GU continues play in the Banana Belt on Friday afternoon with a 4:30 game against Washington State University.
