SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - A two-out, two-run, bases-loaded single off the bat of freshman Marty Mullins gave LMU (7-11-1) baseball the runs it needed in the top of the ninth to secure the series sweep over Cal Poly (10-10) with a 5-4 comeback win at Baggett Stadium. The win marked the Lions' second series sweep of the season.
Andy Beal earned his third save in as many games after tossing the ninth for the Lions.
Cal Poly's Evan Reed came to the mound in the top of the ninth, and the Lions got the best of him for the third straight game. With one out, back-to-back singles by Angelo Songco and Sean Dovel gave the Lions a pair of runners. Justin Bunkis was then hit by a pitch to load the bases to set up Mullins' heroics. Mullins' two-run hit was a shot to center that brought in pinch runners LaMell and Mendoza to make it 5-4.
With two outs in the second inning, Miller reached first on an error by second baseman Pat Pezet. He scored his second run of the game on a single by Eric Farris.
The Lions made CP starter Thomas Eager pay for a leadoff walk to Dovel in the third when Will Dugoni singled to plate the Lions' third run of the game.
Cal Poly pushed one across in the bottom of the third when Pezet singled to score Adam Melker, who had reached on a walk.
The bottom of the fifth was a big frame for the Mustangs, who scored three on a walk, three singles, and a two-base error to take a 4-3 lead.
LMU starter Brian Wilson worked 6.1, allowing three earned runs on six hits before giving way to Nate Keadle, Lee Roberts, and Beal. It was Roberts (1-0) who earned the win after throwing the eighth inning.
Reed fell to 1-1 after allowing the go-ahead runs in the ninth.
In addition to Mullins' game-winner, Dovel was the bright spot for the Lions' offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Miller and Wilson added two hits each.
The Lions return to Los Angeles for their one home game before seven straight road contests. It will be Cal State Northridge and LMU Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. game at Page Stadium. Fans can catch the action on Gametracker and Lions' All-Access audio at www.LMULions.com.
