FRESNO, Calif. - The 16th-ranked University of San Diego baseball team (12-8) dropped a rubber game, 6-2, Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game to Fresno State University (7-11) at Beiden Field. With the loss, the Toreros drop the three-game series to the Bulldogs.
The Toreros jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sean Nicol got things rolling for the Toreros with a single through the left side and moved to second on Justin Snyder's walk. Shane Buschini then drove in Nicol with a RBI single.
Fresno State answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning as they scored two runs on a two-run double to left centerfield to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
The Toreros then evened the score in the top of the sixth inning as they scored one run on three hits. Jordan Abruzzo led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on a Daniel Magness single. After Mike Metzger loaded the bases with a single, Logan Gelbrich delivered an RBI single to move the score to 2-2.
The Bulldogs then went on to score four unanswered runs over the next three innings to put the game at its final of 6-2.
Offensively for the Toreros, Nicol, Buschini, Snyder and Metzger all went 2-for-4 and Logan Gelbrich went 2-for-2 to lead the Toreros offense. Both Buschini and Gelbrich added an RBI.
Ricardo Pecina (3-2) was saddled with the loss for the Toreros as he allowed four runs on six hits in 5.1 innings of work. Clayton Allison (2-1) was credited with the win for the Bulldogs as he allowed two runs on eight hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Irvine for a 6 p.m. non-conference game with the UC Irvine Anteaters.
