LEWISTON, Idaho - - The Gonzaga University baseball team won its sixth straight en route to capturing the 2007 Banana Belt Tournament title Sunday with a 4-3 victory over Lewis-Clark State College at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho.
The win improves Gonzaga to 9-8 for the season, marking the first time this year the Bulldogs record has been over .500. The loss was the first of the season for LCSC, which falls to 12-1 overall.
Clayton Mortensen (2-2) pitched the complete game in the win, allowing three runs on four hits in 9.0 innings. Taking the loss for the Warriors was Jared Joaquin (1-1), who allowed one run on one hit in one inning of work.
The Zags jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. Mike Terry got scoring started with a two-run double to center field that scored Mark Castellitto and Ryan Wiegand. The third run of the frame was scored when Bryan Winston scored on an infield ground out by Michael Rhodes.
The Warriors knotted the game 3-3 in the bottom sixth with a three-run double by Jessie Mier.
Gonzaga scored the game winning run in the eighth frame when Wiegand hit a sacrifice fly that scored Evan Wells, who had walked to lead off the inning.
The Zags will hit the road again this upcoming Thursday when they start a road trip to Utah. Gonzaga will face Brigham Young University in a three-game series starting Thursday before visiting the University of Utah in a two-game set.
