SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 22nd-raked University of San Diego baseball team (15-9) won their sixth consecutive win over cross-town rival San Diego State University (12-9), 6-4, Sunday evening in the final game of the Tony Gwynn Classic at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Aztecs jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Nick Romero three-run homer over the left field fence.
The Toreros answered back in the top of the third inning when Josh Romanski launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the right field fence, to move the score to 3-1.
USD continued to chip away at the lead as they scored one run in the top of the fourth inning. Shane Buschini led off the inning with a single to right field, but the right fielder then committed a fielding error which allow Buschini the make it all the way to third base. Logan Gelbrich then hit a sacrifice fly deep into center field, allowing Buschini to come across for the second run of the game for USD.
USD tied the ball game up in the top of the fifth inning as Kevin Muno got things going with a stand-up triple to right field. Muno then came across on a wild pitch to even the score at 3-3.
The Toreros then took the lead in the top of the sixth inning in a strange turn of events. Buschini reached on a single to the first baseman. Gelbrich then struck out, but the ball hit the dirt and Gelbrich beat out the throw from the catcher to safely reach first base and move Buschini to second. Daniel Magness then did the scoring damage with a two-run double to left field to give USD a 5-3 lead.
The Aztecs then took back one run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a Josh Chasse RBI single to right field to cut the Toreros lead to one at 5-4.
The Toreros added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning. Gelbrich got things rolling with a single to right field and he moved to third on a Magness single up the middle to give USD runners at the corners with two outs. Romanski then hit a ball to the SDSU shortstop, who bobbled the ball, allowing Romanski to reach first, moved Magness to second and allowed Gelbrich to come across for the sixth USD run of the game.
Offensively for the Toreros, Buschini led the way with his went 3-for-4 with one run scored performance. Romanski went 2-for-4 with one home run, Magness went 2-for-4 with one double and two RBI and Hansen went 2-for-4 as the three other USD players to record multiple hits on the day.
AJ Griffin (3-1) picked up the win on the mound for USD, as he allowed one run on one hit, while striking out seven in 5.0 innings of work. Lance Sewell (3-1) was saddled with the loss for the Aztecs as he allowed five runs, two earned, on six hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Wednesday as they head up Interstate 5 to take on the seventh-ranked Titans of Cal State Fullerton in a 6 p.m. game.
