SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Keoni Ruth's grand slam home run in the bottom of the seventh inning highlighted the University of San Diego baseball team's 16-1 pounding of cross-town rival San Diego State University Sunday afternoon in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Cunningham Stadium.
With the win the Toreros move to 11-8 on the season, have won their fourth consecutive game and claim the three-game series with the Aztecs. With the loss the Aztecs fall to 6-14.
USD had six players record multiple hits on the day with Jordan Abruzzo leading the way going 2-for-5 with four RBI and one home run. Steve Singleton ran his hit streak to five games with his 4-for-5 three runs scored performance.
The Toreros wasted no time in scoring as they put up four runs on thee hits in the second inning. Steve Singleton led off the inning with a single through the right side and moved to third base on a Daniel Magness single to left field. Ruth brought Singleton across when he hit a hard shot to the shortstop, who misplayed the ball allowing Ruth to safely reach first base. Abruzzo advanced both runners on a fly out to left field and Magness came across for the second run of the inning when Josh Romanski hit an RBI single to center field. After Romanski advanced one base on a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Lilly, both Ruth and Romanski scored on an error by the SDSU shortstop which also allowed Shane Buschini to safely reach first base capping off the scoring for the inning.
USD tacked on one more run in the fourth inning when Romanski hit a rocket shot to the first baseman. The SDSU first baseman committed a fielding error allowing Romanski to safely reach first scoring Ruth, who had doubled, from third base pushing the lead to five.
In the fifth inning USD scored four more runs on a Magness RBI single through the right side, an Abruzzo RBI single through the right side, and a two-run Lilly single to left field pushing the lead to 9-0.
USD tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning on an Abruzzo three-run blast over the left field fence giving USD a 12-0 advantage.
USD final four runs came when Ruth launched a rocket shot over the left field fence with the bases loaded for a grand slam home run sealing the win for the Toreros.
SDSU spoiled the shutout for the Toreros in the ninth inning on a wild pitch which scored Brian Kinsman, who was hit by a pitch.
Junior Josh Butler (4-2) picks up the win for the Toreros allowing no runs on four hits, while striking out eight in seven complete innings of work. SDSU starting pitcher Mike Koons (2-3) was saddled with the loss for the Aztecs allowing nine runs, four earned, on seven hits in 4.1 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action at 6 p.m. on Sunday as they play the second half of a doubleheader at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the campus of San Diego State.
