SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego baseball team (12-8) completed a three-game non-conference sweep of cross-town rival San Diego State University (6-15) with a 10-5 win Sunday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Toreros did most of their scoring damage in the seventh inning scoring four runs on four hits. Justin Snyder led off the inning getting on base after being hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double by Steve Singleton. Daniel Magness then brought Snyder home with an RBI double to right field, moving Singleton to third. Keoni Ruth then laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Singleton for the second run of the inning. Ryan Lilly then capped the scoring for the inning with a two-run single to right field giving USD an 8-3 advantage.
The Aztecs gave the Toreros a brief scare in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Aztecs knotted the game at three runs apiece scoring runs on back-to-back run scoring doubles by Quintin Berry and Lance Zawadski.
USD answered back in the sixth inning when Logan Gelbrich hit an RBI infield single to the third baseman, bringing across Jordan Abruzzo, who had doubled, from third to regain the lead. USD would not look back.
Offensively for the Toreros, Magness led the way with his 3-for-4, two RBI performance. Singleton also had a solid game at the plate for the Toreros going 3-for-6 with two RBI and one double.
Matt Couch (3-0) picks up the win for the Toreros allowing three runs on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. Justin Lynch (1-2) was saddled with the loss for the Aztecs allowing one run on two hits in 1.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday as they head to Houston, Tex. for the start of a five-game week with top-ranked Rice University in a single game at 5 p.m. (PST). USD will then square off against Texas Southern University in a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday before taking on the Cougars of the University of Huston in a three-game series over the weekend.
