FRESNO, Calif. - After waiting through rain delays that cancelled the first two games of the day at the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic, Gonzaga University and Fresno State University finally squeezed in nine innings with Fresno State winning the battle of Bulldogs. FSU won 5-1 to improve to 15-8. Gonzaga dropped to 11-9.
Josh Monroe was effective on the mound for the first five innings before Fresno State scored the first runs of the game. Beau Mills connected for a two-run triple to stake FSU to a 2-0 lead. Monroe worked one more strong inning but was saddled with the loss falling to 2-2.
Fresno State added three more runs in the eighth scoring on a wild pitch and an RBI singles by Chris Vitters and Steve Susdorf. Susdorf and Mills both had two hits for Fresno State.
Gonzaga made the game interesting in the ninth. Zach Woodward drove home Gonzaga's lone run on a ground out. Gonzaga stranded runners at second and third when the game ended. GU was limited to only four hits with Scott Campbell, Jackson Brennan, Dustin Colclough and Aaron McGuinness all collecting hits.
