FRESNO, Calif. - Darin Holcomb drove in five runs as the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (12-9) scored early and often during a 12-2 win over Bucknell University (4-7) on day three action of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic. The Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing streak to open the six-day tournament.
Holcomb started the Bulldogs rally in the top of the third hitting his fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot off Bisons starter Ryan Gryskevicz (0-2). Freshman designated hitter Ryan Wiegand followed three batters later with a bases clearing double and Gryskevicz was done for the day.
Bobby McEwen was solid for the Bulldogs tossing 6 innings with six strike outs and two runs allowed. McEwen improved to 2-1 as the game was called after seven innings due to a predetermined 10-run rule.
Gonzaga added two more runs in the fourth on a Bobby Carlson two-run double and Holcomb drove in his final two runs with a two-run double in the fifth. Carlson was 3-for-5 while Holcomb was 2-for-4. Wiegand was 2-for-3.
Bucknell scored its only two runs in the bottom of the sixth as pinch-hitter Alex DeOteris connected for a two-run double. Austin Turbin was 2-for-2 for the Bison.
