HOUSTON, Tex. - The University of San Diego baseball team (13-9) scored eight unanswered runs to come from behind and claim an 8-1 non-conference win against Texas Southern University (14-5) Wednesday afternoon.
After the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, USD would knot the score at one run apiece in the fourth inning on a Shane Buschini ground out to the second baseman, scoring Keoni Ruth, who had singled.
USD did most of its scoring damage in the fifth inning putting up three runs on three hits. Ryan Lilly got tings rolling with a stand-up double to center field. Steve Singleton then singled to right field and advanced to second on the throw, allowing Lilly to score giving USD a 2-1 lead. Singleton moved to third on a Jordan Abruzzo ground out to the shortstop. Ruth drove in Singleton with an RBI single to left field. Ruth then stole both second and third base and came home for the final run of the inning on a Daniel Magness groundout to the shortstop.
The Toreros would go on to score one run in the sixth inning on a Buschini run scoring double, two runs in the eighth on a Buschini run scoring double and a Logan Gelbrich single and would cap their scoring in the ninth inning with one run on a wild pitch to put the game at its final of 8-1.
Buschini led the offensive charge for the Toreros going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two doubles.
Ricardo Pecina (2-1) picked up the win for the Toreros allowing one run on six hits while striking out five in 6.1 innings of work. Miller was saddled with the loss for the Tigers allowing four runs on six hits in 6.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will have Thursday off before taking on the Cougars of the University of Houston in a three-game non-conference series this weekend. Friday's game is schedule for a 5 p.m. (PST) start.
