FRESNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University (13-9) scored two runs in the sixth inning on a bases loaded walk and bases loaded hit batter as the Bulldogs rallied for a 6-3 win over Lafayette College (3-7) at the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic. Gonzaga improved to 2-2 at the tournament with two games remaining on Friday and Saturday.
Lafayette scored single runs in the first three innings as the Leopards gained a 3-2 advantage against GU starter C.J. McClure. Lafayette received RBI singles by Frank Cortazar, Tom Hayes and Jeff Butler to take the early lead. Hayes finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate.
Gonzaga took its first lead of the game in the top of the second scoring two runs on a Ryan Wiegand RBI double and Will Ayala RBI single. Lafayette scored in the bottom of the second and third to regain the lead until the sixth. Josh Bryant (1-0) pitched three shutout innings of relief for GU to pick up the win. Cory Powell tossed a perfect ninth for his first save.
The Bulldogs took advantage of some wildness by Leopards starter Brian Cope as they opened the inning with walks to Zach Woodward and Bobby Carlson. Dustin Colclough loaded the bases with a single to center. Aaron McGuinness tied the game with a walk and Scott Campbell gave GU its final lead when he was hit by a Cope (1-1) pitch.
Gonzaga added insurance runs in the seventh on a Colclough RBI single and in the ninth on a Wiegand RBI single. Wiegand finished 3-for-5 while Ayala was 2-for-3.
The Bulldogs play Washington State University on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs and Cougars have already split two meetings this season. Game Tracker statistics will be available for the game through www.GoZags.com
