Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's baseball team kept things rolling as the Gaels moved their unbeaten streak to 11 with a 10-0 shutout over Southern Utah. SMC was paced by the arm of Sean Gleason and his 11 strikeouts. With the win, the Gaels improve to 13-8-1 overall.
The Gaels erupted for five runs in the first frame and that was more than enough for Gleason. The junior college transfer fanned 11 and scattered seven hits in 8.2 innings for his fourth straight win.
SMC batted around in the first as four different Gaels tallied a RBI. Sophomore Joel Staples smacked a double down the left field line to score Randy Wells. Kyle Jensen scored the lone Gaels run not from a RBI on a Dustin Wittwer wild pitch.
Saint Mary's added one in the third when junior Kenny Fuglerud drove in Jensen on a groundout to first.
The Gaels tacked on two in the fifth and another two in the seventh to run away from the Thunderbirds.
SMC rapped out 14 hits compared to the seven of SUU. The Gaels were led at the plate by Wells. The newcomer batted 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Jensen and Staples both tallied two hits with a RBI.
Wittwer was tagged with the loss after allowing five earned on six hits in 3.1 innings. Matt McCormick got the final out of the ballgame to complete the shutout for the Gaels.
The Gaels have now moved its unbeaten streak to 11, the best streak in the modern era for SMC.
Gleason has put together quite the streak of his own as well. After the gem against the Thunderbirds, the La Junta, CO native posts a 0.30 ERA with a 4-0 mark and 35 Ks in his last four starts.
Saint Mary's will continue its four-game set against Southern Utah tomorrow in a twin bill. The first game will start at 11 a.m. from Louis Guisto Field.
