SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 22nd-ranked University of San Diego baseball team completed a three-game sweep over the University of Houston with a convincing 8-3 win Sunday afternoon in a non-conference game at Cunningham Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros complete a perfect 4-0 record for the week, improve to 19-9 overall and have now won seven of their last eight games. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 11-12 overall.
USD got on the scoreboard first as in the second inning as Sean Nicol went deep for the third time this season with a solo shot over the left field fence to give USD a 1-0 lead.
San Diego then added two more runs in the third inning on two hits. Kevin Muno got things rolling with a single to the third baseman and he moved to second on a Kevin Hansen sacrifice bunt. Josh Romanski and Justin Snyder then drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with one out. After a Jordan Abruzzo fly out, Shane Buschini then did the scoring damage as he drove in two runs with a single up the middle to give USD a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars then made a game of it in the fifth inning as they cut the Toreros lead to one, scoring two runs on one hit. The Houston runs came on a Ryan Lormand RBI single and a fielder's choice to move the score to 3-2.
The Toreros then responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to again gain back the momentum. Hansen led off the inning with a stand-up double to left field and he moved to third on a wild pitch. Snyder drove in Hansen with a sacrifice fly to center field to give USD their first run of the inning. Romanski then tripled to right field and Abruzzo brought in Romanski with a RBI single through the left side. Abruzzo then advanced to second on a balk and Daniel Magness drove in Abruzzo with a RBI single to center field to cap the scoring for the inning and move the score to 6-2.
Houston took back one run in the seventh inning on an error by the Toreros and USD would add two more runs in the eighth inning on an Abruzzo RBI single and a Buschini run-scoring triple to put the game at its final of 8-3.
Offensively for the Toreros, Abruzzo, Buschini and Nicol led the way going 2-for-4 and Hansen was also a solid force at the plate as he went 2-for-3.
Ricardo Pecina (4-2) picked up the win for the Toreros as he allowed two runs on four hits in 6.0 innings of work. Russell Holzhauer also had a solid outing on the mound for the Toreros as he allowed no runs on no hits in 2.2 innings of work, retiring all seven batters he faced. Shea Hancock (1-1) was saddled with the loss for the Cougars as he allowed four runs on six hits in 4.0 innings of work.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to Las Vegas, Nev. to begin a three-game series with the UNLV Rebels. Friday's game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
