Box Score

Henderson, NV- The Saint Mary's baseball overcome an eight run sixth by Southern Utah but could not hold on as SMC fell 10-9 Saturday afternoon from Foothill High School. Senior Corey Madden fanned a career-high 11 in the loss. After the day the Gaels move to 12-9 on the season.

The game shaped up to be a pitcher's duel through the first five innings as Madden fanned 10 T-Bird batters and held SUU to just three hits over that stretch. Meanwhile, T-Bird hurler Larry Ellenbrook retired nine of the first 10 Gael hitters he faced, but Saint Mary's was able to plate single runs in each of the next three innings en route to a 3-0 lead heading into the home-half of the sixth inning.

After SUU finally got to Madden and SMC reliever Ryan Doyle for a eight run sixth the Gaels came back with five runs of their own in the seventh, including a two-run triple from Eric Cattoni, who would advance home on the play as an errant T-Bird relay throw trickled into the SUU dugout.

Saint Mary's senior Delaney Gallagher continued the rally with a two-out, two-run double later in the frame as Saint Mary's sent 11 men to the plate overall to pull even at 8-8.

In this barnburner though, SUU would end up on top. Saint Mary's regained the lead with an unearned run in the eighth, but Southern Utah answered with two runs in its half of the inning to pull out the victory.

Offensively, SMC was led by senior Sam Carter, Orben Frederick and Gallagher. Carter piggy backed his career day yesterday with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Frederick moved back above the .400 mark with a 3-for-5 day while Gallagher accounted for three of Saint Mary's seven RBIs on a 2-for-3 performance from the plate.

Madden's double digit strikeout performance was his second on the season. The back-to-back double-digit performance by Madden and Fountain was also the second time the duo has eclipsed 10 Ks this year.

Saint Mary's aims to capture its first road series tomorrow when the two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (PST), at Morse Stadium on the CC Southern Nevada campus.
